GlobalSource Partners' Brazil Economics Analyst Alexandre Schwartsman is one of Brazil’s leading economists, focusing on macroeconomic and growth issues. In a career that includes achievement at the highest levels of public and private service, he has distinguished himself for the depth and integrity of his economic analysis.
Dr. Schwartsman served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil in charge of international affairs. In addition to being a voting member of the Monetary Policy Committee, his responsibilities included management of Brazil’s sovereign debt and the regulation of foreign exchange and capital transactions. During his tenure at the Central Bank, he spearheaded the effort to revamp the existing FX and capital transactions regulations to simplify and clarify them. This included unifying all the legal but non-statutory regulations into a single framework and abolishing virtually all the most restrictive foreign exchange norms, thus reducing tension and uncertainty regarding FX transactions. He was also a member of the board that proposed the pre-payment of Brazil’s obligations to the IMF. Subsequent to his work at the Central Bank, he served as Chief Economist for Latin America at ABN AMRO Bank, and later, as Chief Economist for Brazil at Santander
Dr. Schwartsman holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, and has taught Economics at the University of São Paulo (USP), at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), the Brazilian Institute for Capital Markets (IBMEC-SP), as well as Insper (Instituto de Pesquisa e Ensino). He is a co-author of the book Complacencia, which highlighted imbalances in the Brazilian economy at a time when many were relaxed about its performance. In addition to his work as a consultant on macroeconomic issues, he is a regular contributor to Veja magazine and O Estado de São Paulo newspaper, as well as a sought-after voice in the country’s media, including on CBN Radio.
