“Unfair and unwarranted”. That is how Vice President Geraldo Alckmin described the U.S. government’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Brazilian exports. According to the vice president, the administration is preparing a program to support the affected sectors. Alckmin also said the government could invoke the Reciprocity Law, but it is unlikely that this course of action will be pursued. A Genial/Quaest poll released yesterday on the new tariff package shows that 51% of respondents blame Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party’s presidential pre-candidate, for the measure. Another 30% blame Lula. In other words, the issue will clearly be one of the central topics of the election campaign. The party convention period begins next Monday, July 20, and runs through August 5.
