Gábor Bálint Nagy, Hungary's Prosecutor General resigned yesterday and will be reportedly out of office by August 25.Mr. Nagy is a key name of PM Magyar's list of the 'removables', or as he more often calls them, the 'Fidesz-puppets', those constitutionally independent, in principle politically neutral, but in practice Fidesz-appointed top public officials, who could block the implementation of the Tisza government's policy plans, including the one to get access to EU funds, and, in the Prosecutor General's case, primarily the plan to root out high-level corruption. Until 2025, he was the cabinet chief of Péter Polt, a long-serving predecessor in the same office, who was an absolutely key figure in the Orbán regime, essentially securing criminal impunity to the top tier of the Fidesz' political family. Mr. Nagy was appointed by Fidesz to his current rank for nine years in 2025, supposedly with a view to him doing the same service to Fidesz as his predecessor.His resignation may sound surprising at first glance knowing all of the foregoing, but the circumstances are changing the picture significantly. The other day, Mr. Polt, Mr. Nagy's former boss and mentor, was removed from the office of the Constitutional Court's president by the Constitution's 17th amendment. Mr. Polt will be out of office by August 1 in practice. Then just in the last few days, the Prosecutor General's Office raided the data centre serving Fidesz, essentially grabbing and taking the servers, so that since then, Fidesz' correspondence and even internet service have been dysfunctional.
