Politics: The 4T Government and Morena amid Latin America's political realignment
Less than two years into her presidency, Claudia Sheinbaum faces compounding vulnerabilities that point toward a difficult remainder of her term. A stagnant economy, rigid public finances, deepening ties between Morena and organized crime, and unmet social demands across security, healthcare, and public services are eroding both her personal approval ratings and her party's electoral standing in several regions — although not yet at a nationally threatening level. On two fronts simultaneously, her room for maneuver is narrowing: domestically, the absence of meaningful policy correction makes deeper ungovernability increasingly likely; and externally, as U.S. pressure over the extradition of Morena-linked officials shows no sign of relenting, and the risk of annual T-MEC reviews adds a permanent layer of economic uncertainty.
The broader Latin American context offers a cautionary backdrop. The region's progressive cycle has run its course, undone by a combination of economic mismanagement, failure to address insecurity, internal leadership fractures, and a right that has successfully rebranded itself as an anti-establishment force. The left's association — however unfair in individual cases — with permissiveness toward crime, institutional erosion, and economic disorder has proven electorally lethal across Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and potentially Colombia and Peru. Trump has accelerated this dynamic by normalizing radical right leaderships and embedding security cooperation as the central test of bilateral relationships, pressuring left-wing governments to choose between sovereignty and the appearance of soft-pedaling on organized crime.
Mexico is not yet at an inflection point, but the structural conditions that have brought down left-wing governments elsewhere — economic stagnation, insecurity, corruption scandals, and an inability to self-correct — are present and accumulating. The 2027 midterms will be the first real electoral test of whether Morena can weather them.
