Seven likely outcomes in China from the Trump tariffs
China struck back against the new tariffs with a significant 34 percent tariff on US goods, set to take effect on April 10. This is a much broader attack on the US than China engaged in during the first Trump Administration. China also restricted exports of seven types of rare earth metals, added 16 US groups and 11 companies to the sanctions list, launched anti-dumping investigations into X-ray tubes, and suspended imports of sorghum and other products, clearly aimed at Trump’s midwestern base. These measures are modest in light of the upheaval in global trade that all nations will now have to handle. However, focusing solely on China, we speculate in this report about what will happen in China and globally with the escalation of the trade war with the US government.
