Russian drones in Polish airspace. What to think?The (known) facts and our take During the night and the early morning of September 9, Russian drones entered the Polish airspace multiple times. The incident occurred during the Russian heavy bombing operation on Ukraine involving 400 drones and 19 missiles. As many as 19 drones crossed the Polish border, the majority from the territory of Belarus and the rest from Ukraine. Polish, Dutch, and Italian jets were scrambled. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced in an X post that those 3 or 4 drones that posed a direct threat were shot down, and it seems they have been monitored since they entered the Polish airspace. The debris was found both close to the Belarusian and Ukrainian borders, and even over 130 miles/200 km deep into the Polish territory, in northern Poland and southeast Poland. The analysis of the debris points to the drones being of Gerbera type, which are decoy drones that Russia uses to mislead the air defense systems by misidentifying them as the Iran-made Shahed drones that carry warheads. Nobody was injured, but some property was destroyed. This seems to be the most severe breach of the Polish airspace so far, but less extreme incidents have happened a few times since the invasion of Ukraine began. In our opinion, this is not an act of war but rather another of the hybrid threats and disruptions that Russians have made in Poland, aiming to destabilize the Polish political situation, check NATO readiness, and also, or maybe most importantly, divert the political scene from the war in Ukraine.
