The U.S. military intervention in Venezuela has shifted the global landscape, increasing pressure on the Mexican government to address the links between politics and organized crime. The repercussions in Mexico will be highly significant becaise this event has exposed—through the stances taken by various actors—the country’s internal conflicts and fears. These include U.S. threats to intervene in Mexico due to alleged ties between Morena politicians and organized crime; the authoritarian tendencies of former President López Obrador, which current President Claudia Sheinbaum has inherited; and the persistent polarization between the government and the opposition.
