Notes on the March 8th Colombian Congressional and Primaries elections

1. At 10:15 pm Colombia time, according to Bulletin 37 of the National Electoral Registry, and with 98.4% of polling stations reported, the leftist Pacto Histórico is the winner of the congressional elections, 4,38 million votes for the Senate and 1.9 million votes for the House of Representatives. 2. The center-right Centro Democrático was second with 3 million for the Senate, and 2,5 million for the House of Representatives. 3. It is still to be decided how many senators and House representatives each party will obtain. An initial projection by the newspaper La Silla Vacía for the Senate is: Pacto Histórico, 25 senators, and 2 more senators from indigenous communities, giving a a total of 27 for the leftist coalition. The center coalition could be composed of the Liberal Party's 13 senators, Alianza Verde's (11), Partido de la U's (9), Mira-others ' (5), for a total of 38 senators. The right-wing block comprises Centro Democrático, 17 senators, Conservative Party (11), Cambio Radical (6), and Salvación Nacional (3), for a total of 37 Senators. 4. In sum, what could be called the pro-institutions parties, that played such a crucial role in 2022-2026, prevailed in the Congressional elections and will likely keep 75 seats out of the 102 of the Senate. 5. The winners of these two contests were the two extreme parties, the Petrista Pacto Histórico, and the Uribista Centro Democrático. However, the Petro coalition did not really obtain a share of Congress that changes the status quo. 6. Can we predict the presidential election with these results? Hardly.
