The local election result is a warning to the ruling JLP despite what appears to be a narrow win
While the final count is not quite yet finished for Jamaica’s local government, on Monday, February 26, the ruling JLP (Jamaica Labour Party) appears to have eked a very narrow victory in terms of the number of municipalities it controlled, although a number were effectively tied. Confusingly, both party leaders claimed victory on Monday evening, with the JLP arguing it had won 7 municipalities against the PNP’s 4, while the Peoples National Party (PNP) said it had won the largest number of divisions. Late that evening, Prime Minister Andrew Holness had declared victory on the basis of winning half of the 14 municipalities.
“If we look at what existed before, the PNP retained Westmoreland, Hanover, Manchester, and St Catherine,” Holness said. “The Jamaica Labour Party retained all that it had — Trelawny, St Mary, St Ann, St James, St Elizabeth, St Thomas, Portland.”
However, not all have been finally called, so a tie is still possible.
