In an end to an era, Jamaica changes its Central Bank Governor the week before Jackson Hole in Wyoming
Last week, Dr Brian Langrin succeeded Richard Byles as governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ). Byles’ seven-year term, which began August 19, 2019, concluded on August 18, 2026. If one includes his time as co-chair of the Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC), this marks the end of an era. In thanking him for his service, Finance Minister Fayval Williams noted, “He guided the nation’s monetary policy with a steady hand through extraordinary times and leaves the bank stronger and more independent than he found it. He leaves a legacy of stability on which Dr Langrin will build.”
Against that backdrop, the MPC unanimously decided to keep the policy rate at 5.50 per cent following meetings on August 14 and 17, a decision taken before Dr. Brian Langrin formally took office as governor on Wednesday. However, Dr, Langrin told the assembled press that he had been briefed on the deliberations and was satisfied that the decision was supported by the data and consistent with the BOJ’s mandate. While Langrin largely signaled continuity on monetary policy, his first press conference also offered an early indication of a possible aggressive push further on financial-sector reform, about which he described himself as “passionate”.
