Fresh polls: sentiments on territorial concessions evolve amid peace deal discourse

The world is abuzz with discussions about President-elect Donald Trump's territorial claims on Greenland and Canada. Meanwhile, I’d like to share some new poll results reflecting Ukrainian sentiments, which seem particularly significant as we approach the upcoming negotiations after January 20. Fresh polling results indicate a decline in the number of people rejecting any territorial compromises in exchange for peace with Russia. While the majority of respondents (51%) still oppose any territorial concessions, this marks a notable drop from 55% in May 2024 and 58% in October 2024. The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, which conducted the poll, highlights that respondents were not given specifics about the format of the concessions. The results likely reflect the widespread discussion surrounding Donald Trump's stance that Russia will retain the territories it has occupied so far. Nevertheless, a significant portion of Ukrainian society continues to reject any territorial concessions to Russia, even as key allies openly suggest that Ukraine should relinquish claims to the occupied territories—at least for the time being. The next significant figure is the decline in the number of people willing to endure the war for as long as it takes. According to the December poll, this number has dropped to 57%, down from 63% in October. From the start of the war until February 2024, it consistently remained above 70%.
